Enhancing the visitor experience with RFID interactive guides

Momedia and Glasgow Caledonian University have launched a joint project to develop a ground breaking PDA RFID system to provide rich multimedia content to exhibition and museum visitors. As the hand-held player is brought close to the exhibit, the RFID tag triggers associated multimedia content. The content which is updated using a standard web server can provide audio, video, still images and text in multiple languages.

RFID - Radio Frequency Identification
PDA - Personnel Digital Assistant

At the moment the user expereience is often limited to reading exhibition labels mounted on nearby walls or walking around with audio guides. It is sometimes difficult for visitors to find out more about a specific exhibit and many audio guides can only be played in a linear fashion. By offering visitors an interactive guide, curators around the World can provide rich media - that adapts to users as they walk around an exhibit.

The PDA RFID solution offers a multimedia labelling system for exhibition curators - allowing different groups to find information on exhibits which is best suited to their interests. Rather than trying to make one label suit all groups.

Galleries and museum can make static exhibits more appealing to younger audiences by providing a more interactive experience around displays.

RFID interactive guides provide a key strategic enhancement to the gallery or museum visitor experience.
